Recently, reports issued by the Natural Resources Defense Council, Green for All, and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst’s Political Economy Research Institute (PERI), showed that investment in a low-carbon economy can produce up to 300 percent more jobs. Robert Pollin, the co-director of PERI, told Matthew Wheeland of GreenBiz.com, “Investing in clean energy for $1 million will generate 16.7 jobs; correspondingly, investing in fossil fuels generates about 5.3 jobs,” Pollin explained, “When you net the two things out, you’re going to get about 12 incremental jobs per million in spending by investing in clean energy.” Not only will a green economy decrease current unemployment levels, but it will also trim down our country’s carbon footprint.
